This seemingly simple UI element has plenty of weird behaviors associated with it that are not so easy to overcome or anticipate. This article will cover some of them and present solutions.

One of the major flaws with user input is knowing when the user has finished typing. If your application has a button telling the user to perform some action (think submit) after filling out several edit texts, then you are fine. But if you don’t want to bother the user with endless submit buttons, you need to think of a way to overcome this barrier.

The solution is to use the TextWatcher. This interface exposes three methods you can use to understand how the user interacted with your edit text.

- beforeTextChanged beforeTextChanged

We will be using this interface, particularly, the afterTextChanged method, in combination with a timer. This timer’s purpose is to measure a certain period of time that will pass, so we can say with assurance that the user has finished typing.

If the above solution seems cumbersome to you and you may want a different approach, you can also listen in on when the user has pressed the Done button in the soft keyboard or presses the enter button.

To do that, we use the EditorActionlistener and check either the actionId or the keyEvent that just occurred.

If you place an edit text in your layout, chances are, that once the layout containing that edit text appears to the user, the edit text will have the focus. This means that the soft keyboard may pop up or the user may be distracted from other areas you may want his/her focus to be on. So, how can we avoid this behavior?
